International Publication by FKG UGM IBKG Faculty Highlights the Potential of Herbal Materials in Dentistry

International scientific publications are a key benchmark in evaluating the academic quality of an educational institution. Successfully publishing research in reputable international journals not only enhances the university's visibility but also drives global innovation. For Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), this achievement demonstrates the capacity of its academics to develop scientific knowledge in the field of dentistry, particularly through the exploration of herbal and natural materials.

In the 2023/2024 second semester, three lecturers from the Department of Dental Biomaterials Science (IBKG) at FKG UGM successfully published articles in Scopus-indexed international journals. These publications were facilitated by the Publication Acceleration Program, managed by the FKG UGM Research and Publication Unit. The research focuses on innovating the use of herbal materials for dental care and the development of safer and more environmentally friendly dental materials.

The first publication, written by drg. Dyah Anindya, was published in the Journal of International Oral Health (Q3), while drg. Harsini followed with her research published in the Research Journal of Pharmacy and Technology (Q2). Finally, drg. Mutiara Annisa contributed her work to the Journal of Dental Research, Dental Prospects, and Dental Clinics (Q3).

These publications not only contribute to the academic world but also have a positive impact on the environment. By utilizing eco-friendly, low-carbon footprint natural materials, this research supports global efforts toward achieving Net Zero Emissions. The use of renewable natural materials, as opposed to conventional synthetic materials, supports long-term sustainability strategies, particularly in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

This success also has significant implications for students and faculty at FKG UGM. The international publications inspire students to continue exploring the potential of natural materials as innovative solutions in dental practice. For faculty, these publications strengthen FKG UGM's position on the global research map and open opportunities for broader collaborations with other institutions.

"This achievement motivates us to involve more students in research and open new collaborations between departments," added drg. Harsini.

These publications reflect FKG UGM's involvement in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Through the innovation of natural materials, this research can reduce dependence on fossil fuels in the production of dental materials, supporting the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy.
