Fissure Sealing Practicum Using Glass Ionomer Cement

Tuesday, 20 August 2024 – Third-semester students of the Dentistry program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) participated in a Fissure Sealing practicum at the Harkati Dewanto Phantom Laboratory, focusing on the use of Glass Ionomer Cement to protect teeth from the risk of caries.

The practicum aimed to teach students how to perform Fissure Sealing using Glass Ionomer Cement. This procedure is crucial because both deciduous and permanent molars have pits and fissures that can serve as biofilm accumulation sites, leading to dental caries. Fissure sealing is a preventive measure that involves sealing pits and fissures on the occlusal and buccal surfaces of posterior teeth using Glass Ionomer Cement.

Through this practicum, the Faculty of Dentistry at UGM not only equips students with essential clinical skills but also contributes to global efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The skills acquired are expected to enhance students’ ability to prevent caries and promote better oral health in the community.
