Dental Checkups and Education on the Impact of Food Sucking in Children at TK ABA Jogokaryan

The Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted a dental checkup and educational activity at TK ABA Jogokaryan, Yogyakarta, on 25 October 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness about the negative effects of food sucking habits on dental health.

Specialist residents, including drg. Ayu Kristin and drg. Arif Rahman, explained the importance of proper chewing for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. They emphasized that proper chewing not only aids digestion but also helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

In addition to the educational session, the faculty team provided free dental checkups for children. These examinations helped detect early dental issues and reinforced the importance of regular dental visits as part of comprehensive healthcare.

drg. Arif Rahman stated, "Food sucking is often overlooked, but it can have serious consequences for children's dental health. Through this education, we hope children will understand the importance of proper chewing from an early age."

Children participated in interactive sessions using visual aids and engaging media designed to teach them about the impact of various foods on dental health in a fun and informative way. Their enthusiasm was evident as they learned about oral hygiene and the role of proper chewing.

This activity aligns with FKG UGM’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
