The Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), held a practical lecture on child psychology on 28 October 2024, at FKG UGM. The event featured Smita Dinakaramani, S.Psi., M.Psi., a child psychologist, as the speaker. This initiative was led by Drg. Anrizandy Narwidina, M.DSc, Sp.KGA, Ph.D., and supported by the Head of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program, Prof. Drg. Sri Kuswandari, MS, Sp.KGA(K-KKA), Ph.D.
This lecture aimed to equip residents with a deeper understanding of early childhood development, including mental patterns, stress, and children's emotions. Such knowledge is crucial for creating a positive dental care experience for children.
Smita Dinakaramani emphasized the importance of psychological approaches in pediatric dentistry. “"Children often experience anxiety and fear when visiting the dentist. By understanding their mental state, we can provide better care and create a more positive experience,“ they said.
During the session, Ms. Smita also shared behavioral therapy techniques to address orofacial habits that can affect children's dental and psychological health. The residents actively participated in discussions and learned how to integrate psychology into pediatric dental practice as part of a holistic approach to children's health.
Special recognition was given to drg. Ayu Kristin, drg. Puspita Hadi, and drg. Arif Rahman Setyawan for their active participation during the lecture, highlighting the residents' commitment to fostering a collaborative learning environment and contributing to the development of children's healthcare knowledge.
