The inauguration ceremony for the new dentists of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), for the September 2025 period was made more meaningful with a speech delivered by a representative of the graduates. This responsibility was entrusted to drg. Aini Hasibah Ningtyas, who expressed her gratitude and offered a thoughtful reflection on the long journey she and her peers had undertaken together.
Gratitude and Reflection on the Journey
In her remarks, Aini began with a story about a patient who regained the ability to smile after receiving complete denture treatment. The simple expression of gratitude from the patient became a symbol of how valuable the role of a dentist is in restoring a person’s quality of life.
She described the journey of dental education as a process of “rediscovering what was lost”—from the smile of a patient, the willingness to change, to the sense of calm and purpose gained through service. For her and her fellow graduates, this journey was also about discovering meaning in life and embracing a noble professional calling that they will carry throughout their lives.
“Becoming a dentist is a noble promise—to be an intermediary of healing, as well as an artist and engineer who creates beautiful work for every patient,” she stated.
Words of Appreciation
Aini extended her deepest gratitude to many parties. She thanked her parents for their unconditional love and patience throughout the long years of study. She expressed appreciation to lecturers and professors for their guidance, encouragement, and mentorship. She also thanked friends and fellow students for their support and companionship, and acknowledged the administrative staff, laboratory personnel, technicians, and cleaning staff at RSGM Prof. Soedomo who played an essential role in both academic and clinical training. Lastly, she expressed gratitude to patients for the trust they placed in the students, which became invaluable learning experiences.
A Message for Fellow New Dentists
Aini reminded her peers to also appreciate themselves for enduring and completing the journey. With the inauguration, a new phase of service begins—one of lifelong learning, dedication to patients, and commitment to society.
“If one day you feel tired or discouraged, remember this moment and everything you have fought for. Always trust that the Almighty will guide every step we take,” she concluded.
Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This speech also reflects the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty). The story of a patient who regained their smile illustrates how oral health plays a role in improving self-confidence and productivity, which in turn can reduce the economic burden on households caused by health issues. The service of newly inaugurated dentists to the community also supports vulnerable groups who may have limited access to dental care. SDG 4 (Quality Education) is reflected in the graduates’ success as the outcome of a high-quality educational process.
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) is represented through the direct contribution of dentists to improving public health.
SDG 5 (Gender Equality) is demonstrated by the strong representation of women among the new dentists, showing that equal opportunities are upheld in the profession.
The meaningful message delivered by drg. Aini Hasibah Ningtyas serves as both a reflection of the journey and a reminder that the profession of dentistry is a lifelong path of service. This moment marks the beginning of a new responsibility—to continue working, caring, and making a real contribution to society.
