Adhesive Dentistry: Techniques to Strengthen the Bond Between Teeth and Biomaterials

Adhesive dentistry is one of the main pillars in the development of modern dentistry. This approach focuses on optimizing the bond between natural tooth tissues, particularly dentin and enamel, and various biomimetic materials such as composite resin and ceramics. With increasingly advanced adhesive technology, dental restorations now emphasize not only aesthetics but also long-term strength and durability.

One of the major challenges in adhesive dentistry is ensuring that the bond between biomaterials and tooth structures does not easily degrade due to mechanical stress or the oral environment. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate dentin bonding agent and its application method is critical.

In line with this, a study entitled “The Effect of Type and Application Method of Dentin Bonding Agents on the Shear Bond Strength of Lithium Disilicate Fixed Prostheses” was conducted by a Faculty of Dentistry UGM student, Jonathan Antono, under the supervision of drg. Murti Indrastuti, M.Kes., Sp. Pros., Subsp. PKIKG(K) and Dr. drg. Sri Budi Barunawati, M.Kes., Sp. Pros., Subsp. PKIKG(K). This study serves as an important reference in understanding how variations in bonding materials and application techniques can improve restoration bond quality.

The study results showed that the success of adhesive bonding depends not only on the chemical formulation of the bonding agent but also on how it is applied by the clinician. Differences in methods, such as self-etch versus total-etch, can significantly affect shear bond strength and the long-term durability of lithium disilicate-based restorations.

The clinical implications of this research are substantial. By understanding techniques and strategies to strengthen bonding, dentists can improve restoration success predictability, reduce the risk of failure, and provide more satisfactory treatment outcomes for patients.
