FKG UGM Conducts Fire Disaster Simulation at the DLC Building

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) conducted a fire disaster mitigation simulation at the Dental Learning Center (DLC) Building on Friday (30/1). The activity aimed to test and improve the preparedness of the entire academic community in responding to emergency situations.

Head of the Administrative Office of FKG UGM, Wulansari, S.S., explained that the simulation was designed to train rapid response procedures for all building occupants. “We organized this simulation to improve disaster preparedness among the academic community. We want to ensure that everyone knows what to do when an emergency situation occurs,” said Wulansari.

The faculty selected the DLC Building because of its high intensity of use. The building accommodates teaching and learning activities, student practicums, and stores various frequently used research equipment.

The simulation scenario began when a fire broke out in one of the rooms. Members of the FKG UGM community who witnessed the incident immediately activated the emergency alarm and called nearby colleagues to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers (APAR).

At the same time, the medical response team moved toward the location to evacuate victims from inside the room. In the scenario, the fire was designed to escalate and fail to be extinguished using APAR equipment, forcing officers to request assistance from the fire department.

In addition to training human resource preparedness, the activity also tested the reliability of the building’s safety infrastructure. Head of the Environmental Infrastructure Safety Team, Hendricus Sujatmiko, stated that the faculty needed to ensure that protection systems such as alarms and fire suppression installations functioned optimally during emergencies.

The simulation also involved faculty security personnel, who serve as the frontline responders in campus emergency situations. FKG UGM security officer Riszky emphasized the importance of such tactical exercises. “Activities like this are essential to ensure that we, as security personnel, are always ready and alert in responding to emergency situations, especially fires,” said Riszky.

The exercise also provided valuable hands-on experience for staff members and students. Ahmad Faiq, a laboratory assistant at FKG UGM, had the opportunity to directly practice operating a fire extinguisher. “This was my first experience using an APAR. It turned out not to be too difficult. Earlier, the UGM K5L team guided us on how to use it properly,” Faiq explained.

Another participant, Tryanindita Noorvitasari, said the practical exercise gave her firsthand experience in responding to emergency alarms. She felt the activity increased her awareness of workplace safety and helped her better understand self-evacuation procedures.
