UGM Orthodontic Residents Present Cases of Patients Receiving Donation Support

On Monday, 16 December 16, 2024, orthodontic residents at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) presented patient cases selected to receive donation support from The Netherlands Society-Cleft Lip, an organization dedicated to providing care for patients with congenital conditions. The event took place at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Faculty of Dentistry, UGM (FKG UGM).

During the session, orthodontic residents had the opportunity to present various cases of patients requiring orthodontic treatment. Each presentation included an in-depth analysis of the patient’s condition, covering medical history, clinical examination results, and proposed treatment plans. The residents also highlighted how support from The Netherlands Society could significantly contribute to the success of the treatment and improve patients' quality of life.

One of the most compelling presentations featured the case of a 7-year-old child with a cleft lip and palate. The resident handling this case outlined the challenges involved, including the need for surgical intervention before orthodontic treatment could begin. The presentation emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, where collaboration among surgeons, dentists, and orthodontists is essential for achieving the best possible outcomes.

Professors and lecturers from UGM’s Department of Orthodontics served as expert consultants during the session. They provided constructive feedback and shared their experiences in treating similar cases. The discussion was highly interactive, with the panel not only evaluating the presentations but also offering additional insights on techniques and treatment strategies that could be applied.

This event not only allowed the residents to demonstrate their ability to analyze and plan treatments but also raised awareness of the importance of donor support. With assistance from The Netherlands Society, patients in need of orthodontic treatment gain better access to healthcare services, which may otherwise be financially out of reach.

The session also highlighted how orthodontic treatment plays a crucial role in the success of surgical and medical interventions for cleft lip and palate patients. Residents were reminded of their responsibility to provide high-quality care and to stay committed to continuous learning and adapting to the latest advancements in orthodontics.

As the event concluded, residents were encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills gained from these presentations in their clinical practice. With a spirit of collaboration and innovation, FKG UGM remains committed to improving the quality of dental and oral healthcare in Indonesia, making a positive impact on underserved communities, particularly patients with cleft lip and palate.

This event serves as a concrete example that dental education is not just about theory but also about making a real impact on patients and society. With support from various stakeholders, including The Netherlands Society, FKG UGM is dedicated to continuously enhancing patients’ quality of life through effective and appropriate treatment. This initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 17: Partnerships to Achieve the Goal.
