UGM Orthodontics Residents Take Part in National Specialist Competency Exam at Universitas Airlangga

Residents of the Orthodontics Specialist Education Program (PPDGS) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), participated in the National Competency Examination for Orthodontics Specialists organized by the Indonesian Orthodontic Collegium on 12 July 2025, at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. This exam represents the final stage in specialist orthodontics education and determines eligibility for the nationally recognized orthodontics specialist degree. The exam was conducted in three main formats Computer-Based Test (CBT): assessing theoretical knowledge and evidence-based clinical understanding, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): evaluating direct and standardized clinical skills, and Wire bending test: measuring precision and technical skill in shaping orthodontic wires.

Examinees came from six orthodontics specialist education institutions in Indonesia: Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), and Universitas Airlangga (Unair) as host. The participation of FKG UGM residents reflects the institution’s commitment to high-quality, standardized specialist education, preparing professional graduates ready to provide competent orthodontic care.

This national evaluation also represents FKG UGM’s contribution to achieving national goals of producing qualified, skilled, and competent oral health professionals, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). By undergoing objective, comprehensive national assessments, future orthodontists are expected to practice safely, ethically, and in line with community needs. Furthermore, this initiative also supports SDG No. 4 (Quality Education), reflecting a transparent, high-quality, and lifelong learning-oriented higher education system in dentistry.

Beyond being a final academic milestone, the exam also serves as a collaborative platform, bringing together orthodontics residents from across Indonesia in the spirit of professionalism and academic partnership. FKG UGM continues to encourage its residents to actively engage in every stage of their education while upholding quality, integrity, and excellence in orthodontics.
