Opening of the 78th International Symposium of FKG UGM: Strengthening the Role of Sociopreneurship and Technology in Oral Health Transformation

The Faculty of Dentistry of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) officially opened its Annual Symposium series in celebration of its 78th anniversary under the theme “Empowering Dental Sociopreneurs: Education & Technology for Oral Health Transformation” (17/04/2026). The event serves as a strategic platform bringing together academics, practitioners, and students to discuss the future of oral healthcare driven by innovation and social entrepreneurship.

Chairperson of the symposium committee, Dr. drg. Bramasto Purbo Sejati, Sp.BM.M.Subsp.T.M.T.M.J (K), stated in his remarks that the event focuses not only on improving clinical competence, but also on encouraging the emergence of dentists who are adaptive to technological developments and possess a strong spirit of social entrepreneurship.

“This theme was chosen to encourage oral healthcare professionals not only to excel technically, but also to develop technology-based social entrepreneurial mindsets,” he stated.

He added that approximately 420 participants attended the event, representing diverse backgrounds ranging from undergraduate to doctoral students, general and specialist dentists, and healthcare practitioners.

“Over the next two days, participants will take part in scientific symposiums, hands-ontraining sessions, and student innovation competitions through the 3-minute pitch competition,” he explained.

The entire series of events was centered in Yogyakarta as a space for collaboration and interdisciplinary, international knowledge exchange.

Encouraging the Integration of Science, Technology, and Social Impact

Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. drg. Suryono, SH, MM, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of scientific forums such as this as platforms for knowledge sharing and strengthening professional networks.

“I sincerely hope this forum becomes a meaningful space for sharing knowledge and strengthening collaboration in dentistry,” he remarked.

He also highlighted the diversity of participants as a major strength in creating comprehensive scientific discourse.

“Participants come from various educational and professional backgrounds, ranging from students to specialist dentists. This demonstrates extraordinary enthusiasm,” he added.

UGM: Sociopreneurship as the New Direction of the Dental Profession

Representing the Rector of UGM, Director of Academic Studies and Innovation, , Dr. Hatma Suryatmojo, S.Hut., M.Si., affirmed that the symposium theme aligns with UGM’s vision of integrating academic excellence with social impact.

“UGM is committed to ensuring that academic excellence can be translated into tangible benefits for society,” he stated.

According to him, dentists today are expected not only to master clinical aspects, but also to address societal needs through technology-based innovation.

“Dentistry today is encouraged not only to possess clinical expertise, but also to embrace sociopreneurship that bridges the gap between scientific knowledge and real societal needs,” he explained.

He further noted that collaboration between digital technology and artificial intelligence will become key in addressing global oral health challenges.

“This forum is expected to serve as a catalyst for the emergence of new ideas and strategic partnerships in shaping the future of dental care,” he added.

Ethical and Communication Challenges in the Digital Era

Meanwhile, Vice Chair IV of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Dental Association (PB PDGI), drg. Gagah Daru Setiawan, MM, highlighted the evolving dynamics of the dental profession amid technological and social media developments.

“Dentists today can no longer rely solely on the knowledge acquired during university education; they must continuously develop themselves alongside technological and service advancements,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining professional ethics, particularly in the use of social media and interactions with patients.

“Poor communication often becomes the source of problems, even leading to legal disputes. Therefore, informed consent must always be properly conducted,” he stressed.

Furthermore, he highlighted the increasing public awareness and critical attitudes toward healthcare services.

“In the digital era, even minor mistakes can quickly go viral. This is both a challenge and a reminder for healthcare professionals to always remain professional,” he noted.

Momentum for Strengthening Innovation and Collaboration

This international symposium featured not only domestic speakers, but also international experts, making it a global forum for knowledge exchange.

At the age of 78 years, FKG UGM is expected to continue serving as a pioneer in the development of dental science in Indonesia.

“We hope this event brings significant benefits to the advancement of dentistry in Indonesia and globally,” stated the Chairperson of the Committee.

The symposium demonstrated that the transformation of oral healthcare depends not only on technological advancement, but also on the ability of human resources to adapt, innovate, and create broad social impact.
