Cadaver Dissection Training

Studying human anatomy through textbooks provides only a theoretical understanding. However, the opportunity to directly interact with anatomical structures through cadaver dissection offers a more immersive and hands-on learning experience.

On 12-13 December 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), hosted a Cadaver Dissection Workshop attended by health professionals from various regions. The workshop featured dr. Nur Arfian, Ph.D., the Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Anatomists (PAAI), as the main speaker.

dr. Nur Arfian explained that the cadaver dissection procedure begins with the superficial layers of the body before progressing to deeper structures. This process is essential in anatomy education, especially for medical, dental, nursing, and other healthcare students. "Position the cadaver appropriately for the area to be dissected. For example, for the chest and abdomen, the supine position (lying on the back) with arms at the sides allows easier access," he advised.

Before starting the dissection, he emphasized the importance of checking surgical instruments, such as scalpels, scissors, tweezers, blunt dissectors, and forceps. "All instruments must be sterile," he added, stressing the importance of maintaining the cadaver's tissue integrity by keeping it clean and properly hydrated to prevent damage.

During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to dissect the thorax, one of the most crucial regions in anatomical studies. One of the participants, dr. Harry Allan Papendang from Southwest Papua, expressed his appreciation for the event.

"For healthcare workers in remote areas, training like this is rare. This workshop has been incredibly beneficial," he said. He also praised the facilities at FKG UGM, highlighting the availability of multiple cadavers, allowing each participant to gain hands-on experience.

Dr. Harry hopes the program can be extended and include more advanced dissection training. "We hope to not only dissect superficial areas but also enhance our skills in more complex procedures, such as brain surgery," he added.

The enthusiasm of the participants was recognized by Prof. drg. Heni Susilowati, Head of the Dental Learning Center (DLC) Management. "We have 25 participants from various regions, including those from distant areas like Papua and Bukittinggi," she noted. DLC serves as an excellent facility for capacity-building programs for healthcare professionals. Prof. Heni emphasized the importance of holding such workshops regularly to enhance practical skills and professional experience.

This workshop is expected to contribute to the professional development of healthcare workers and improve the quality of medical services across different regions.
