A Proud Achievement at a National Event
A student of the Specialist Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, once again made an outstanding achievement. At the National Congress and Annual Scientific Meeting of the Indonesian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (KONAS PIT PABMI) 2025, held in Makassar, 26-30 August 2025, drg. Ridho Novlizar won 2nd Place in Poster Presentation. This achievement was made possible through the guidance of FKG UGM lecturers, namely drg. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.BMM.Subsp.C.O.M.(K), and drg. Pingky Krisna Arindra, Sp.BMM.Subsp.Ped.O.M.(K).
Highlighting a Buccal Abscess Case Caused by Gutta-Percha
The poster entitled “Buccal Abscess Caused by 15 Gutta-Percha Embedded in the Buccal Vestibule: Mistreatment?” presented a unique case of a 33-year-old female patient with a buccal abscess caused by the improper use of 15 gutta-percha.
Based on the scientific discussion in the study, orofacial infection is a serious condition that requires prompt and appropriate management. This infection can spread to various facial anatomical spaces and potentially cause life-threatening complications. Therefore, elimination of the infection source, abscess drainage, antibiotic therapy, and supportive care are key pillars of management.
The presented case demonstrates that the misuse of medical materials can worsen a patient’s condition. This highlights the need for clinical competence, evidence-based procedures, and strict sterilization control in dental practice.
The Importance of Early Management
The case report concluded that the inappropriate use of medical materials can lead to secondary infections. Early management of abscesses is crucial to prevent the wider spread of infection and reduce the risk of serious complications.
This point also provides important education for dental practitioners to always prioritize patient safety principles and clinical procedures in line with international standards.
This scientific achievement is not only academically impressive but also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting the improvement of healthcare quality through proper orofacial infection management, demonstrating the quality of specialist dental education at FKG UGM that produces high-quality scientific work, and encouraging evidence-based clinical innovation and practice to raise healthcare standards.
drg. Ridho Novlizar’s achievement at KONAS PIT PABMI 2025 proves that FKG UGM specialist students excel not only in clinical practice but also actively contribute to the advancement of science and public health. This accomplishment is expected to inspire the younger generation of dentists to continue innovating while upholding professionalism.
