The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) held an expert lecture on Monday, 16 December 2024, at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium, 3rd Floor. The event was attended by orthodontic residents of FKG UGM and moderated by Dr. drg. Cendrawasih AF., M.Kes., Sp.Ort.(K), a renowned expert in the field of orthodontics.
This session featured Prof. Anne Marie Kuijpers-Jagtman, DDS, PhD, one of the world’s leading experts in orthodontics and congenital disorder treatment. She delivered a lecture on the theme “For Better Future.”
During the lecture, Prof. Kuijpers-Jagtman explored critical aspects of orthodontic care for patients with cleft lip and palate conditions. She discussed the challenges in designing effective and comprehensive treatment plans, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in handling such cases. She highlighted that orthodontic treatment is not just about technical procedures but also requires collaboration with surgeons, general dentists, and other healthcare professionals to achieve optimal outcomes.
One of the key takeaways was the importance of a thorough patient evaluation before designing a treatment plan. Prof. Kuijpers-Jagtman stressed that each patient has unique needs that must be considered, including physical, emotional, and social factors. She also emphasized the crucial role of clear communication between the medical team, patients, and their families to ensure they fully understand the treatment process and set realistic expectations.
Orthodontic residents had the opportunity to engage in an interactive Q&A session, allowing them to explore the topics further and interact directly with Prof. Kuijpers-Jagtman. This discussion enriched the participants' knowledge and provided new insights into best practices in treating patients with congenital disorders. Several residents posed in-depth questions about the latest orthodontic techniques and their applications to specific clinical cases they encountered. The session provided valuable guidance on how modern orthodontic advancements could be integrated into patient care.
This expert lecture is part of FKG UGM’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of orthodontic education and training. By inviting international experts, the faculty aims to help residents develop advanced skills and knowledge and apply them in daily clinical practice. Additionally, the event served as a networking opportunity, allowing residents to establish professional connections with leading figures in orthodontics—an invaluable asset for their future careers.
In closing, Dr. Cendrawasih expressed hopes that similar expert lectures would be held regularly, enabling residents to stay updated with the latest developments in orthodontics. She also emphasized the importance of collaboration between educational institutions in Indonesia and abroad to further enhance the quality of dental education in the country.
