Amid the rolling hills of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), a great spirit burns in the hearts of young students who dream of pursuing higher education. However, their journey toward top universities is often hindered by distance, financial constraints, and limited access to information. Recognizing the immense potential in this region, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and KAGAMA NTT brought hope through the Education Program Outreach and Promotion Event in Kupang on 28 November 2024.
Held at the BPMP Hall of NTT Province, the event fostered collaboration among academics, government representatives, local communities, and KAGAMA NTT. Several faculties, including the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM), Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), and Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), took part in the initiative. The event was attended by high school students, undergraduate students, teachers, and KAGAMA members.
The keynote speaker, Nur Sakti Ningrum, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of FIB, delivered a comprehensive presentation on undergraduate and postgraduate admission pathways, UGM’s flagship programs, and strategies for university entrance success. She emphasized that higher education is a strategic step in navigating career challenges and contributing to regional development. "Through this event, we hope to inspire the younger generation in NTT to continue their education at UGM and choose study programs that align with their passions and talents," said Nur Sakti Ningrum.
In 2023, 30 students from NTT were accepted into UGM, representing 11.6% of the total applicants from the province—meaning nearly 260 students applied. While this figure is encouraging, UGM sees even greater potential for NTT students to access high-quality education.
Dyana Rakhmasari Kusumaningsih, S.E., M.Ec.Dev., Coordinator for Academic and Student Affairs at FKG UGM, highlighted the importance of expanding educational access for students in Eastern Indonesia. "We hope that students and communities in NTT will gain a better understanding of the opportunities and support systems available at UGM, including admission pathways, top study programs, and scholarship opportunities. Our goal is to ensure that anyone with a strong passion for learning has unrestricted access to quality education," Dyana explained.
The enthusiasm of the participants was evident in the dynamic Q&A session, where students eagerly asked about scholarship opportunities, admission test preparation, and study options. To further support participants, the organizing team distributed informative leaflets and guided them in accessing UGM’s official website (um.ugm.ac.id) for more detailed information.
This initiative aims to broaden the perspectives of NTT students on higher education opportunities while reinforcing UGM’s commitment as a Pancasila-based university to providing inclusive and high-quality education for all.
