Toothache: Recognize the Causes and How to Prevent It

Toothache is characterized by pain or discomfort in the area of the teeth or gums. The pain can range from mild to severe and often indicates a more serious problem with dental and oral health.

Toothaches can be caused by various factors. The most common causes of tooth pain include cavities, inflammation and infection of the gums, broken teeth, and dental abscesses. A toothache or cavity occurs when the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, is damaged, allowing bacteria to enter and cause infection.

Leaving a toothache untreated can be dangerous; it can lead to the spread of infection from the teeth to other parts of the body, such as the mouth, jaw, or even throughout the body. Additionally, ignoring a toothache can negatively affect overall health and the psychological well-being of the sufferer.

drg. Aulia Ayub, Sp. Ort., a lecturer in the Orthodontics Department at FKG UGM, stated that anyone can experience a toothache; however, individuals who do not maintain oral hygiene, have a history of gum disease, or frequently consume sweet foods and beverages are more susceptible to this problem.

He advises those experiencing a toothache to maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing their teeth twice a day after meals and before bed. In addition to brushing, using dental floss is also recommended for cleaning between teeth.

If a toothache interferes with daily activities, it is important to consult a nearby dentist for professional treatment, such as fillings or root canal therapy. “Regular dental check-ups every six months are the best way to maintain oral hygiene and prevent toothache issues,” said Aulia.

By maintaining dental and oral health, we contribute to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, SDG 3: “Good Health and Well-being.” By ensuring access to quality dental care, we can improve overall health, reduce disease burden, and enhance quality of life.
