During the inauguration ceremony for new dentists at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) for the September 2025 period, a touching and proud moment filled the hall when a speech representing the parents was delivered by Ir. Surya Triharto, MT, MBE, President Director of Pertamina International Shipping and father of Poeti Surya Nadia Nabila, one of the newly inaugurated dentists.
In his remarks, Ir. Surya expressed deep gratitude to the faculty leadership, lecturers, and academic staff who had guided the students throughout their years of study. “We extend our highest appreciation and respect to all lecturers and academic staff who have devoted energy, time, and attention to our children,” he stated sincerely.
He emphasized that this inauguration is not the end of the journey, but rather the beginning of a life of service to society. According to him, true success is not only when preparation meets opportunity, but also when one is able to rise after every setback. This principle, he noted, will be an important foundation for the new dentists as they begin their careers. This message aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which promotes lifelong learning and continuous capacity-building.
Ir. Surya also highlighted the importance of values such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, discipline, and a continuous passion for learning. He reminded graduates to never forget where they come from and to uphold the reputation of their alma mater. “Remember that you were educated here. Guard the honor and credibility of this institution,” he conveyed meaningfully.
The speech also served as a powerful reminder that children’s achievements are inseparable from the support of their families. The steadfastness, prayers, and moral encouragement from parents form an essential part of the journey to complete dental education. This spirit of family support reflects SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), which emphasize the contribution of families in nurturing resilient and inclusive healthcare professionals.
With a warm yet heartfelt tone, Ir. Surya concluded his speech with a lighthearted poem that brought smiles to the audience. His presence not only represented pride for his daughter but also symbolized the collective support of all parents who have accompanied their children throughout their academic journey.
