Orthodontic Treatment with Clear Aligners: Process and Benefits

Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional braces. Clear aligners are transparent orthodontic devices specially designed to gradually straighten teeth. Made from high-quality plastic materials, these aligners are nearly invisible, offering greater comfort and aesthetic appeal for users.

Treatment Process with Clear Aligners

The first step in treatment with clear aligners clear aligners is a consultation with an orthodontist. The doctor will perform a digital scan or take an impression of the teeth to design a series of aligners tailored to the patient’s condition. Once the aligners are produced, patients will change to a new set every 1–2 weeks to gradually shift the teeth into place. Aligners must be worn for 20–22 hours per day to achieve optimal results, only being removed when eating or brushing teeth. Treatment duration typically ranges from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the severity of the case. Research conducted by Dr. drg. Cendrawasih Andusyana Farmasyanti, M.Kes., Sp.Ort.(K), and Dr. drg. Sri Suparwitri, S.U, Sp.Ort.(K) has shown that clear aligners are effective in producing orthodontic tooth movements to correct malocclusions. These movements include tipping, bodily movement, intrusion, extrusion, torque, and rotation. The addition of auxiliary components such as attachments, power ridges, buttons, elastics, divots, and bite ramps has been proven to facilitate more complex tooth movements and enhance the overall effectiveness of clear aligner treatments.

Benefits of Using Clear Aligners

One of the main advantages of clear aligners clear aligners is their comfort and flexibility. Unlike conventional braces, these aligners can be easily removed, allowing patients to maintain better oral hygiene. In addition, since they are made from transparent materials, clear aligners offer a more aesthetic appearance, making them a popular orthodontic solution among adults.

Advancements in Clear Aligner Materials and Construction

With technological advancements, the materials and construction methods used for clear aligners have significantly evolved. Research conducted by Dr. drg. Cendrawasih Andusyana Farmasyanti, M.Kes., Sp.Ort.(K) . and Dr. drg. Sri Suparwitri, S.U, Sp.Ort.(K) on the development of clear aligner materials and construction methods in orthodontic treatment shows that thermoplastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) have been used to create aligners with thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 1 mm. The construction methods have also advanced from conventional techniques to digital approaches that utilize 3D scanning and 3D printing, enabling more precise treatment planning and predictable results.

Are Clear Aligners Suitable for Everyone?

Despite their many advantages, clear aligners are not suitable for all orthodontic cases. They are most effective for mild to moderate cases, such as slightly crowded or gapped teeth. For more complex cases, such as severely misaligned teeth or significant jaw issues, orthodontists may recommend alternative treatments, such as conventional braces or additional therapies.

Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners offers a modern solution for those seeking to straighten their teeth in a more comfortable and aesthetic way. With discipline in usage and proper care, patients can achieve a healthier, more aligned smile without the need for traditional braces. The use of digital technology in aligner design not only enhances treatment effectiveness but also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3—Good Health and Well-being—by providing access to more comfortable and effective dental care solutions. Furthermore, innovations in clear aligner materials and manufacturing methods contribute to SDG 9, which emphasizes the importance of industry, innovation, and infrastructure in improving the quality of healthcare services
