Visit of SMA Budi Utama Yogyakarta to FKG UGM

The future of education often begins with small steps fueled by curiosity. This was evident in the expressions of SMA Budi Utama students as they stepped into the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) on Wednesday, 4 December 2024.

A total of 50 eleventh-grade students from SMA Budi Utama Yogyakarta had the opportunity to visit FKG UGM, accompanied by the Vice Principal, Mrs. Sinta. She explained that the purpose of the visit was to provide students with insight into higher education opportunities. "We want our students to have a broader perspective on university life," Mrs. Sinta stated in her opening remarks.

During the session, Drg. Heriati Sitosari, MD.Sc., the guest speaker, delivered an engaging presentation about the two undergraduate programs offered at FKG UGM, Bachelor of Dental Medicine Program (Pendidikan Dokter Gigi) and Bachelor of Dental Hygiene Program (Higiene Gigi)

The Dental Hygiene Program holds a unique distinction as the only program of its kind in Indonesia. Drg. Heriati explained that this program is designed to train professionals specializing in oral health prevention through education and basic dental care.

Meanwhile, the Dental Medicine Program prepares students to become licensed dental practitioners, focusing on diagnosis and clinical treatment. Drg. Heriati highlighted the key difference between the two programs: "Dentists handle complex cases and hold professional licenses, whereas dental hygienists focus on promotive and preventive care, working in collaboration with dentists or healthcare institutions," she added.

The atmosphere became even livelier when a student asked, “Is it harder to get into FKG UGM or to graduate from it?”

The question brought smiles to the room, and Drg. Heriati responded with a thoughtful answer, explaining that it depends on individual abilities and challenges. "Some students find it easy to be admitted, but struggle with their final thesis. With dedication and hard work, everything is achievable," she assured.

Another insightful question came from Vice Principal Mrs. Sinta, who inquired about the recognition of student achievements in the university admission process. Drg. Heriati clarified that all forms of achievements—international, national, and regional—are highly valued. "Include all supporting documents, as they showcase students' talents and active engagement during high school," she advised.

Visits like this serve as a stepping stone for students to plan their academic futures. It is hoped that one day, these students will return to FKG UGM as university students, pursuing their dreams.
