FKG UGM Awards Scholarships to 5 Students from the Profits of the Honesty Canteen

The Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., awarded scholarships to five students within the faculty on Friday (February 20, 2026). Interestingly, the scholarship funds originated from the accumulated net profits of the faculty’s Honesty Canteen, which has been operated since February 2025.

He explained that the program represents a concrete expression of mutual care among members of the campus community. “The results of the honesty shown by lecturers, staff, and students when shopping at the canteen have now returned in the form of benefits to support the future of our students. This proves that the honesty we cultivate together can create extraordinary social impact,” Prof. Suryono stated during the award ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Dental Hygiene Study Program at FKG UGM, Dr. Leny Pratiwi Arie Sandy, S.Kp.G., MDSc., explained that the scholarship recipients were selected carefully. The faculty directly verified the economic conditions of students applying for tuition assistance.

“The socioeconomic conditions of students cannot be generalized each semester. We reviewed and cross-checked the data to ensure the assistance reached the right individuals,” Leny explained.

Scholarship Recipients from the Honesty Canteen Program

  • Gita Rahmatulfitri | Dental Hygiene Program – 2023
  • Rachel Dina Anndita | Dental Hygiene Program – 2023
  • Divanti Tanasya Agustin | Dental Hygiene Program – 2023
  • Fransisca Florencia Devi | Dental Hygiene Program – 2021
  • Masyaa Youlivsia Syariah | Dental Hygiene Program – 2023

The Results of Campus Honesty
The scholarship fund is unique because it comes from profits generated by a self-service canteen operated without attendants. This demonstrates that a culture of honesty within the campus community can produce tangible social benefits for fellow students.

Divanti Tanasya Agustin (21), one of the scholarship recipients from Sleman, admitted that the assistance had been tremendously helpful. The sixth-semester student had struggled with tuition fees and the high costs of practical equipment. “This assistance allows me to feel more at ease while undergoing clinical practice and preparing my thesis without being overly burdened by financial concerns,” she said.

For Divanti, the canteen serves as a means of cultivating integrity. She believes the benefits she received are the result of the discipline and honesty practiced by the campus community.

The Struggles of Independent Students
Similar benefits were felt by Masyaa Youlivisia Syairah (22), a final-year student from Kebumen. Masyaa supports herself independently by working part-time as a tutor and elderly companion to cover her daily living expenses in Yogyakarta.

“My parent is a single mother supporting two children in school. I try to be independent so as not to burden my family. This scholarship from the canteen profits greatly helps cover part of my tuition fees,” Masyaa explained.

Although she rarely shops at the canteen herself, she appreciates the management’s ability to transform business profits into meaningful assistance for students in need. She hopes the program will continue so that even more students can benefit.

Through this scholarship initiative, FKG UGM has demonstrated that a trust-based system maintained within the campus canteen can become a meaningful solution in supporting students’ educational continuity.
