How to Prevent Receding Gums from Getting Worse

Receding gums, or gum recession, is a common oral health problem. If not treated properly, the condition can worsen and lead to various other dental health issues. In this article, we will discuss ways to prevent gum recession from worsening and highlight the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.

Maintaining Proper Oral Hygiene

One of the main steps in managing receding gums is maintaining proper oral hygiene. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Use a fluoride toothpaste to help remineralize and protect tooth enamel.

Regular Dental Checkups

Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. During these visits, your dentist can detect gum problems and provide appropriate treatment before they become more serious. Regular checkups allow for early prevention of gum disease.

Avoiding Harmful Habits

Avoid bad habits such as smoking and using other tobacco products. This habit can accelerate the process of gum recession. Stopping such habits is an important step to prevent further gum damage.

Using Antiseptic Mouthwash

Antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth, contributing to healthier gums and decreasing the likelihood of inflammation. Choose a mouthwash recommended by your dentist for optimal results.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

A balanced and nutrient-rich diet supports both dental and gum health. Make sure to consume foods high in vitamin C, D, and calcium—nutrients essential for healthy gum tissue. Avoid sugary and highly acidic foods, as they can worsen the condition.

Research on Probiotics and Gum Health

A study conducted by Mohammad Hanif Zulfa  , under the supervision of drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio(K)., Ph.D. and drg. Asikin Nur, M.Kes., Ph.D., , titled "The Effect of Kefir Milk Probiotics on the Hydrophobicity of Streptococcus sanguinis ATCC 10556 Bacteria", revealed that probiotics—such as those found in kefir milk—can influence the oral microbiota and potentially improve gum health. Probiotics help maintain bacterial balance and reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria that cause inflammation.

Advanced Therapy and Treatment

In some cases, professional dental treatment may be necessary. If your gum recession is severe, your dentist might recommend procedures such as soft tissue grafting to cover exposed areas. Laser therapy may also be an option to reduce infection and improve gum health.

Addressing gum recession requires a proactive approach that combines self-care with professional assistance. By following the steps above and maintaining overall oral hygiene, you can prevent further gum recession. Don’t hesitate to consult your dentist to receive proper treatment tailored to your needs.
