How to Prevent Tooth Decay with Age

As people age, dental health often becomes a major concern. Many adults experience dental issues such as tooth decay, which can affect quality of life and overall health. A study conducted by FKG UGM student Meidi Aurelia, under the supervision of drg. Elastria Widita, M.Sc., Ph.D., and drg. Finsa Tisna Sari, M.Biomed, on the "Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Tooth Loss in the Elderly in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta," found that low socioeconomic status is associated with a higher risk of tooth loss among the elderly. This highlights the importance of preventive efforts that include adopting a healthy lifestyle and paying attention to dental health, especially for those entering old age.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the most basic step to prevent tooth decay. Here are some tips:

  • Brush Your Teeth Regularly: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This helps kill bacteria and strengthens tooth enamel.
  • Use Dental Floss: Use dental floss daily to clean between your teeth, where toothbrushes can't reach.
  • Rinse with Mouthwash: Using an antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce plaque and maintain oral cleanliness.

Good Nutrition

Eating healthy foods plays a significant role in maintaining dental health:

  • Calcium and Vitamin D: Ensure adequate calcium intake through milk, yogurt, and green vegetables, and make sure you get enough vitamin D to help absorb calcium.
  • Limit Sugar: Reducing the consumption of sugary foods and drinks can reduce the risk of tooth decay, as sugar promotes the growth of cavity-causing bacteria.

Routine Dental Checkups

It is essential to have routine dental checkups, at least twice a year, to detect problems early:

  • Consult a Dentist: Regular visits to the dentist can help identify issues such as cavities, gum disease, and other oral conditions before they become serious.
  • Follow-Up CareFollow-up Care: If there are signs of problems, follow your dentist's recommendations for further treatment.

Avoiding Harmful Habits

Certain habits can worsen dental conditions, especially as you age:

  • Quitting Smoking: Smoking can damage your teeth and gums in addition to other health risks.
  • Avoid Biting Hard Objects: Biting hard items like ice or pencils can damage your teeth.

***

Preventing tooth decay as you age requires a commitment to maintaining good oral health. By keeping your mouth clean, eating nutritious foods, having routine checkups, and avoiding harmful habits, you can maintain your dental health and prevent tooth loss in old age. Awareness of socioeconomic factors and access to dental care are also important for improving dental health in the elderly population, as shown by existing research. These steps are expected to improve quality of life and dental health as we age.
