Curriculum Redesign for Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist Program: An Effort to Improve Educational Quality

The Maxillofacial Surgery Program (BMM) at FKG UGM held a curriculum redesign workshop at Swiss-Belboutique Yogyakarta on 31 May 2024. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including faculty leaders, teaching staff, alumni, and professional organization representatives.

Dr. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.BMM, Subs.Com(K), Head of the BMM Program, opened the event by emphasizing the urgency of curriculum renewal. “In an era where technology and surgical science are advancing rapidly, the curriculum must keep pace. We hope this redesign's outcome will accelerate graduation rates, enhance quality, and shape the graduate profiles we aspire to achieve.”

The workshop featured a series of comprehensive materials delivered through online sessions. Dr. Rossa Amalia, M.Kes, Ph.D., presented the stages of change and necessary documents for the curriculum redesign. Other topics included the concept of specialist dental education presented by Dr. Widyandana, M.H.P.E., Ph.D., Sp. M(K), the new eight-semester curriculum for the BMM program delivered by Dr. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.BMM, Subs.Com(K), and the National Education Standards for Maxillofacial Surgery Specialists presented by Prof. Muhammad Ruslin, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp. BMM., Susbp. Ortognat-D (K). The final session focused on finalizing the curriculum redesign documents, guided by Dr. Pinky Krina Arindra, Sp. BMM., Susbp. Ped. OM (K). Interactive discussions followed each session.

Prof. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., Dean of FKG UGM, expressed his hopes, “This redesign is expected to result in efficiency and optimization of education. In this way, students can graduate more quickly and may even have the opportunity to earn a double degree.”
