FKG UGM Encourages Elementary Students of SD Ungaran 1 to Learn Dental Care from an Early Age

Dental caries remains a major challenge among Indonesian children. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) reported that 80 percent of school-aged children experience caries. Through a simple activity such as Sneusa Dental Health Day, themed “Healthy Teeth, Happy Smiles,” the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), invited students of SD Negeri Ungaran 1 Yogyakarta to learn proper dental care in a fun and engaging way on Friday (31/10).

The activity coordinator, drg. Ryna Dwi Yanuaryska, explained that the program was part of FKG UGM’s community service efforts to instill healthy habits from an early age. “We want children to understand the importance of brushing their teeth properly, attending regular dental check-ups, and not being afraid to visit the dentist,” she said.

Activities were tailored to each grade level. Students in grades 1–2 participated in interactive education on proper toothbrushing techniques; grades 3–4 received dental health examinations; and grades 5–6 joined SIGIBER (Group Toothbrushing Activity). All activities were guided by FKG UGM lecturers and students using an educational and cheerful approach.

Drg. Ryna added that the activity not only provided knowledge but also helped build children’s confidence in maintaining their own health. “We hope this positive experience leaves a lasting impression and becomes a good habit, so they grow into a generation that is aware of the importance of oral and dental health,” she stated.

She also emphasized the importance of not delaying dental check-ups when problems arise, as minor issues can develop into more serious conditions requiring more complex treatment if left untreated.

The principal of SD Negeri Ungaran 1 Yogyakarta, Supardi, S.Pd., welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for FKG UGM’s dental health education program. According to him, the activity provided practical knowledge on maintaining oral hygiene while fostering early awareness of healthy behavior in schools. “We greatly appreciate this activity and hope that collaboration with FKG UGM will continue to help shape a healthy and health-conscious younger generation,” he concluded.

Through this initiative, FKG UGM reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to public health improvement, particularly by fostering good oral hygiene habits from an early age through education and sustained community engagement.
