The academic journey of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BMM) resident of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, drg. Lilis Ria Ariana, brought her to confidently appear at the National Congress (KONAS) and Annual Scientific Meeting (PIT) of the Indonesian Association of Oral Surgeons (PABMI) 2025. The event, attended by oral surgery experts from across Indonesia, took place on 26–30 August 2025 in Makassar. At KONAS PABMI 2025, drg. Lilis recorded an achievement by winning 3rd Place in Oral Presentation under the Case Report category, guided by drg. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.BMM. Subsp.C.O.M.(K)., and drg. Didit Istadi, Sp.BMM. Subsp.Ped.O.M.(K).
The presentation was entitled “Multidisciplinary Management of Ectopic Teeth in Maxillary Sinus: Computed Tomography and Endoscopic Navigation Approach Case Series”.
This topic is considered unique as it discusses ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus, a rare condition that can cause serious problems such as chronic sinusitis, persistent pain, and facial swelling that interferes with patients’ quality of life.
An Innovative Multidisciplinary Approach
In her case study, drg. Lilis and her team combined two important technologies: Computed Tomography Scan (CT) Scan to map the exact position of the teeth in detail, and Endoscopic Navigation to guide the extraction procedure with high precision.
This approach allowed the extraction to be carried out in a minimally invasivemanner, minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues, and accelerating patient recovery. As a result, all three cases handled showed significant improvement post-surgery.
More Than Just a Competition
This success not only adds to the list of achievements of the BMM Specialist Program students at UGM Faculty of Dentistry but also provides tangible impact on the field of dentistry. The study proves that multidisciplinary collaboration can offer new solutions in handling complex cases.
Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals
The achievement of drg. Lilis aligns with the global commitment through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including improving the quality of dental and oral health services with safer surgical techniques, and demonstrating that dental education at UGM produces healthcare professionals who are not only clinically competent but also actively contribute to evidence-based research.
Inspiration for the Young Generation
This achievement serves as an inspiration for other students and residents to continue to be brave in conducting research, presenting scientific works, and contributing to the healthcare field. From the academic space to the stage of national competitions, this spirit of innovation proves that research can bring great benefits—both to science and to society at large.
