FKG UGM Provides Free English Course to Enhance Doctoral Students’ Competence in Dental Science

Yogyakarta, 27 May 2025 — To strengthen the academic and communication capacity of its students, the Doctoral Program in Dental Science, Faculty of Dentistry UGM, consistently organizes a Free English Course for all doctoral students. This activity is held every Thursday at the Doctoral Program Lecture Hall, Faculty of Dentistry UGM, and forms part of the mandatory program for students.

The course has been conducted since 2018 as a form of the Faculty’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges of the international academic arena. The materials taught include not only scientific vocabulary and journal comprehension but also academic writing and scientific presentation skills, which are essential for publications and participation in global scientific forums.

“We recognize that proficiency in English is crucial, especially for students who aim to publish their research or participate in international scientific forums. This program is a concrete step in building graduates who are excellent and competitive at the global level,” said Prof. Dr. drg. Widowati Siswomihardjo, M.S., Head of the Doctoral Program in Dental Science.

The class is directly guided by Waryono, S.Pd, an experienced instructor and Founder of Englishopedia Institute, known for his interactive and practical approach to teaching academic English. During the sessions, students actively participate through methods such as group discussions, presentation simulations, and scientific writing exercises, all of which are tailored to the academic needs of dental science.

The strong enthusiasm of students shows that the course is highly beneficial in boosting their confidence, both in scientific communication and in writing scholarly articles for international publication. The program is also considered to support students’ readiness for scholarship applications, conferences, and international research collaborations.

Moving forward, the Doctoral Program plans to make this course an annual routine activity and part of its academic support, in line with FKG UGM’s vision to produce doctoral graduates who are not only excellent in their field of science but also internationally competitive.
