Using teeth whitening products without professional supervision or consultation with a dentist can pose various risks and hazards to oral and dental health. Although many whitening products are freely available on the market, it's important to understand that these products are not suitable for everyone.
A study conducted by Luisa Kandida, a student at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), under the supervision of Dr. drg. Tunjung Nugraheni, MKes, Sp.KG(K) and drg. Wignyo Hadriyanto, M.S, Sp.KG(K), examined the effect of whitening toothpaste on the color changes of nanofill composite resin discolored by Robusta coffee. The research found that improper use of teeth whitening products can damage tooth enamel and surrounding soft tissues. This highlights the importance of consulting a dentist before undergoing any teeth whitening treatment.
The study also indicated that whitening agents may affect the color stability of restorative materials, such as composite resins. It concluded that “tooth whitening can accelerate the deterioration of restorative materials if used without professional supervision.”
According to the findings, inappropriate use of teeth whiteners may result in:
- Enamel Damage: Excessive or incorrect application may erode tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth damage.
- Tooth Sensitivity: Many individuals report heightened sensitivity after using whitening products, causing discomfort when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages.
- Allergic Reactions: Chemicals in whitening products may trigger allergic reactions in some individuals, leading to irritation in the mouth and gums.
- Perubahan Warna Gigi: Uneven Tooth Coloration: Improper use can lead to uneven whitening results or, worse, discoloration of dental restorations.
Before deciding to whiten your teeth, it is strongly recommended to consult with a dentist. A dentist can assess your dental condition and determine whether whitening is safe for you, as well as recommend suitable products or methods based on your individual needs.
While it is natural to want a brighter smile, your dental safety and health should always come first.
