Wearing braces requires extra attention to maintain oral hygiene. If not properly cared for, food debris can easily get trapped between wires and brackets, which may lead to plaque buildup. Plaque left to accumulate over time increases the risk of dental caries and gum inflammation. Therefore, it is important for braces users to adopt habits that help reduce plaque formation.
One natural method that can help reduce plaque buildup is rinsing with bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) decoction. Research conducted by FKG UGM student Fitria Avriliyanti in collaboration with Dr. drg. Sri Suparwitri, S.U, Sp.Ort.(K) demonstrated that rinsing with a 60% concentration of bay leaf decoction can inhibit dental plaque accumulation in fixed orthodontic appliance users. This effect is attributed to the antibacterial properties of bay leaves, which reduce the growth of plaque-causing bacteria around brackets and wires.
Besides bay leaves, strawberry extract is also known for its antibacterial effects against plaque bacteria. According to research by FKG UGM student Nurul Arina Dewi alongside Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D. and Prof. drg. Tetiana Haniastuti, M.Kes., Ph.D. strawberry extract (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne) has effective antibacterial activity against plaque bacteria and can be an alternative natural way to maintain oral hygiene. The acids and antioxidants in strawberries help inhibit bacterial growth that contributes to plaque formation.
To prevent plaque buildup, braces users are also advised to routinely use orthodontic toothbrushes, dental floss, and antibacterial mouthwash. Reducing the consumption of sweet and sticky foods and having regular dental check-ups are also important steps to maintain dental health during orthodontic treatment. By combining natural methods such as bay leaf and strawberry extract rinses with proper daily care, the risk of plaque formation can be minimized, keeping teeth healthy throughout orthodontic treatment. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
