Physiology Practicum: Pulse Measurement

Yogyakarta, 20 November 2024 – The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) conducted a Physiology Skills Lab focusing on homeostasis and its clinical relevance in the Integrated Laboratory on the fourth floor of the DLC Building. This hands-on session provided students with practical experience in measuring pulse rate, aiming to enhance their clinical skills as future dental professionals. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ensuring quality education and healthcare access.

The Skills Lab is designed to equip dental students with essential clinical competencies early in their education. By participating in this activity, students gained a deeper understanding of physiological homeostasis, a fundamental aspect of their future roles in healthcare. Under the guidance of experienced assistants, students engaged in interactive learning, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to mastering these essential skills.

One of the key components of the Skills Lab was pulse measurement, an essential skill for assessing cardiac function. Understanding how to accurately measure pulse rate is a fundamental competency for all healthcare professionals. Students were trained in manual pulse palpation, a simple yet effective technique.

To accurately measure pulse rate, students were required to use a wristwatch or stopwatch for timekeeping and a notebook and pen for recording results. These tools ensured precision in pulse measurement and documentation. Assistants emphasized the importance of accuracy and attention to detail, as these skills are critical in clinical practice.

The practical session was led by faculty supervisors and skilled assistants, who guided students through each step of the procedure. This structured approach provided both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in performing clinical tasks. Beyond technical skills, the Skills Lab also emphasized collaboration and communication in healthcare settings. Students were encouraged to work in pairs, enabling them to practice their skills while also learning from their peers. This collaborative learning experience is crucial for developing the interpersonal skills necessary for effective patient care.

The Pulse Measurement Skills Lab not only provided essential clinical training but also reinforced FKG UGM’s commitment to expanding access to healthcare education. By investing in students' clinical skill development, the faculty is taking a significant step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).

Through initiatives like this, FKG UGM continues to demonstrate its dedication to advancing healthcare education. The integration of practical skill training with theoretical knowledge is crucial in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
