Avulsed Tooth Replantation Practical Session

On Thursday, 21 November 2024, the Preclinical Lab at the OECF Building hosted an emergency dentistry practical session focused on avulsed tooth replantation. This session was part of the 7th-semester dental curriculum, designed to enhance students' practical skills and knowledge in emergency dental care.

Avulsion refers to the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket, while replantation is the process of reinserting the avulsed tooth back into its original position. The success of avulsed tooth replantation depends on several factors, including: The time elapsed between avulsion and replantation. The extent of periodontal ligament damage. The severity of alveolar bone injury. The effectiveness of stabilization techniques. Understanding these factors is crucial for dental students as they prepare to handle real-world emergencies.

During the practical session, students were required to identify and utilize the necessary tools and materials for tooth replantation. This hands-on experience aimed to ensure that students could accurately perform the procedure while understanding the fundamental principles of emergency dental care.

Before beginning, all students were required to wear lab coats to maintain a sterile environment. Proper preparation of tools and materials was essential for the session's success. Students worked with plaster models featuring pre-drilled interdental spaces and a simulated avulsed tooth. The necessary tools included: A model tooth compatible with the drilled space, 0.4 mm fixation wire, Wire cutters, Orthodontic pliers.

The session began with a brief theoretical introduction on avulsed teeth and replantation procedures. Students learned about the biological mechanisms involved in the healing process and the importance of timely intervention. This foundational knowledge was essential as they transitioned to the practical application of the procedure.

Following the introduction, students were divided into small groups to facilitate hands-on practice. Each group had the opportunity to perform the replantation procedure on the plaster models, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled environment. Instructors provided guidance and feedback, ensuring that students executed the techniques correctly.

As part of the learning process, students also participated in discussions about the ethical considerations and responsibilities of dental professionals in emergency situations. This aspect of the session aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes inclusive and high-quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities.

Beyond technical skills, the session aimed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among students. By simulating real-life scenarios, students became better equipped to handle emergency cases in their future careers as dental professionals. Integrating practical skills with ethical considerations is essential in shaping well-rounded healthcare providers.
