Amid the struggles of thousands of prospective students fighting for their dream to study at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), the story of Oksa Risang Ayu stands out. This new FKG UGM student not only succeeded in passing the National Selection Based on Tests (SNBT) but also overcame a far greater challenge: battling bone cancer, which led to the amputation of her leg.
Oksa’s journey began in 2022 when she started experiencing pain in her leg. “It all started in 2022 when I began feeling pain, but we couldn’t find the cause,” Oksa shared. In early 2023, she was diagnosed with bone cancer and immediately underwent four rounds of chemotherapy. After undergoing cryosurgery in August 2023 to remove the cancerous tissue, she continued chemotherapy until December 2023.
However, in mid-2024, the cancer recurred, forcing Oksa to undergo the amputation of her right leg in May 2024. Despite her declining health, Oksa did not give up. She persevered with her studies and was eventually accepted into FKG UGM in August 2024.
Oksa expressed her gratitude and happiness at being admitted to FKG UGM despite the many challenges she had to face. “I am very happy to be accepted at FKG UGM. Even though I have limitations, I hope to participate in the learning activities here well, and I hope everything goes smoothly,” said Oksa with enthusiasm.
Oksa’s inspiring story reflects an extraordinary fighting spirit and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 5 (Gender Equality), and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequality). FKG UGM has also demonstrated its commitment to providing inclusive and equitable education for all, including those with disabilities, offering everyone the opportunity to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
