Western Blot Workshop: Understanding the Complexity of Molecular Biology

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a seminar and workshops on the Western Blot method on Thursday (6 June) and Friday (7 June). The event, which took place in Classrooms D, E, F, and the Integrated Research Laboratory at the Dental Learning Center was themed “Application of Western Blotting: Qualitative and Quantitative Detection of Protein Markers/Targets in Health, Biology, and Agriculture.”

Collaborating with PT Elokarsa Utama as the provider of tools, materials, and expert speakers, this seminar targeted lecturers, students, industry professionals, and researchers both from within and outside UGM who are focused on molecular biology.

Western blot is a laboratory method used to detect and identify specific proteins in biological samples. This method allows researchers to understand the expression, size, and distribution of proteins in particular cells or tissues. With advancements in technology and research in the field of molecular biology, Western blot has become an increasingly important tool for characterizing proteins and investigating various aspects of their biological functions,” explained Drg. Heni Susilowati, M.Kes., Ph.D., Coordinator for Building Management at the Dental Learning Center.

The first day of the event featured presentations from three speakers: Dr. Nur Arfian, Ph.D., Drg. Heni Susilowati, M.Kes., Ph.D., and Andreas Agustian, M.Sc. from PT Elokarsa. Following the presentations, hands-on practice and discussion sessions were held to directly hone participant's skill facilitated by Drg. Aryan Morita, M.Sc., Ph.D., Drg. Heni Susilowati, M.Kes., Ph.D., Drg. Ryna Dwi Yanuaryska, Ph.D., and the Elokarsa Utama Team. The practical sessions continued on the second day in the Integrated Research Laboratory with the facilitator team.

Through the Western Blot Workshop, researchers can enhance their practical skills in applying this method, minimize errors, and correctly interpret results. Additionally, the workshops provided a platform for researchers to share experiences, expand collaborative networks, and deepen collective understanding of Western blot Western blot techniques in the context of bioscience research. Thus, workshops not only improves individual skills but also enriches the scientific community in their efforts to understand the complexities of the biological world.

This aligns with the third (Good Health and Well-Being), fourth (Quality Education), ninth (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and seventeenth (Partnerships for the Goals) goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
