The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) held a scientific workshop titled “Ensuring Safety and Ethics: A Workshop on Animal Handling and Laboratory Biosafety” on 3-4 October 2024. The event took place at the Integrated Research and Preclinical Laboratory of FKG UGM and the Dental Learning Center (DLC). The purpose of the workshop was to enhance understanding of animal handling, laboratory safety, and ethical considerations in scientific research.
The Department of Biomaterials and Dental Science (IBKG) was represented by Prof. Dr. drg. Siti Sunarintyas, M.Kes. and Dr. drg. Dyah Irnawati, M.S. Prof. Narin, Head of the IBKG Department, stated, “This workshop is highly functional for biomaterials research, both in material testing and the development of new materials.” He also expressed hope for similar events focusing on microbial management and preclinical testing.
drg. Dyah Irnawati, commonly known as drg. Nina, added that the scientific workshop greatly supports biomaterials research. “This event is very beneficial in supporting research, particularly in developing safe and effective biomaterials for dental and oral healthcare,” she remarked.
The workshop included hands-on training on animal handling techniques and strict biosafety procedures to ensure researcher safety and adherence to ethical guidelines. Participants also received materials on ethical considerations when conducting research involving animals.
FKG UGM’s participation in this workshop aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), by providing the knowledge and skills needed to support sustainable research and innovative healthcare technology development.
