Integrated Research Laboratory Workshop Strengthens Quality Standards at FKG UGM

The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) held a Workshop on the Development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Integrated Research Laboratory (LRT) on Friday, July 24, 2026. The event took place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (WIB) at Hotel Porta by Ambarukmo, Caturtunggal, Depok, Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

The workshop was organized to formulate standardized, transparent, and accountable operational guidelines for the Integrated Research Laboratory, with the goal of enhancing the quality of laboratory testing, research activities, and academic as well as external services at FKG UGM.

In her opening remarks, the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation of FKG UGM, drg. Trianna Wahyu Utami, MD.Sc., Ph.D., emphasized the strategic importance of the Integrated Research Laboratory (LRT). She stated that the laboratory possesses tremendous potential and serves as one of the faculty's key pillars for economic sustainability and financial independence. Therefore, its governance and development must continue to be strengthened through continuous improvement.

drg. Trianna also highlighted the importance of expanding workshops and training programs involving participants and partners from outside the university. According to her, providing laboratory training and testing services for external institutions not only enhances the faculty's academic reputation but also broadens collaborative networks and optimizes institutional revenue.

"The Vice Dean encouraged the heads of the research laboratories and laboratory managers to continue maintaining and improving the quality, productivity, and operational efficiency that have already been achieved..The Integrated Research Laboratory's commitment to maintaining research quality and reliability is reflected in its achievements, including receiving competitive grants in two consecutive years, 2024 and 2“025. This recognition provides a strong foundation for further strengthening the laboratory's infrastructure and service capabilities," she said.

In line with this commitment, the Integrated Research Laboratory is expanding the scope of its testing services under ISO/IEC 17025:2017(General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories). This initiative aims to ensure technical validity, compliance with quality management systems, and national as well as international recognition of laboratory test results.

These technical and operational improvements are supported by laboratory staff members, including Elina Rioseta, S.Si. and Indah Nur Hasanah, S.HG., who play active roles in ensuring the successful implementation of testing standards and the day-to-day operational management of the laboratory.

The workshop began with an opening session led by master of ceremonies Ahmad Faiq Mahfuzh, followed by the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and the Gadjah Mada Hymn. In addition to the Vice Dean's remarks, welcoming addresses were delivered by the Head of the Integrated Research Laboratory, Dr. drg. Anne Handrini Dewi, M.Kes.

The main presentation was delivered by Yusuf Umardani, S.T., M.Eng., who provided guidance on developing Standard Operating Procedures based on the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. During the session, participants discussed several fundamental principles for preparing effective laboratory SOPs, including:

1. Clarity and Readability (Clarity) – Using concise instructional language and maintaining a consistent document format.
2. Scientific and Technical Accuracy (Technical Accuracy): – Applying standardized methods (such as ISO and Indonesian National Standards/SNI) and clearly specifying testing parameters.
3. Occupational Health and Safety – Integrating hazard analysis through Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and appropriate laboratory waste management.
4. Quality Assurance (Quality Control): – Implementing blank samples, duplicate testing, and predefined data acceptance criteria to ensure the reliability of laboratory results.
5. ISO/IEC 17025 Principles – Ensuringimpartiality, maintaining customer confidentiality, and establishing metrologicaltraceability throughout laboratory operations.).

Following the presentation, participants—including laboratory heads, testing supervisors, laboratory technicians and staff, as well as faculty representatives—worked collaboratively to draft the SOPs. The workshop concluded with a final review and refinement of the draft documents led by Dr. drg. Anne Handrini Dewi, M.Kes.

Five Priority Standard Operating Procedures Developed. The workshop successfully produced five priority Standard Operating Procedures:

1. SOP for Laboratory Service Discounts for Researchers
2. SOP for the Placement and Management of Donated Laboratory Equipment
3. SOP for Laboratory Staff Overtime
4. SOP for the Organization and Implementation of Laboratory Training Programs
5. SOP for Cell Culture Usage in the Laboratory

Through the development of standardized SOPs, the expansion of ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited testing services, and increased engagement with external stakeholders through workshops and training programs, the Integrated Research Laboratory of FKG UGM is well positioned to become a leading research laboratory that is independent, innovative, and globally competitive.
