Efforts to Gain Laboratory Experience: FKG UGM Master's Students Visit Laboratories at Okayama University, Japan

As part of the international collaboration program between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Okayama University, four students from the Master’s Program (S2) in Dental Science at FKG UGM are participating in an internship at the Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Japan, from 26 August to 6 September 2024.

This internship aims to broaden students' horizons through laboratory experiences in six laboratories across various departments.

On the first day, the students—Asa Karina, Hilmy Irsyadi, Margareta Galuh, and Tolistya Novitasari Abdullah—were welcomed by Prof. Hirohiko Okamura from the Department of Oral Morphology, who provided an overview of the activities planned for the next two weeks, including observations and training in key laboratories at Okayama University.

During the internship, students were divided into two groups to participate in activities across six laboratories: the Department of Dental Morphology, Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Pathology, Biomaterials, Dental Pharmacology, and Oral Physiology.

Additionally, they toured the university hospital to observe clinical practices carried out by professors and residents in the Departments of Radiology, Dental Anesthesiology, Rehabilitation and Regenerative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

According to Prof. Takuya Matsumoto from the Department of Biomaterials, this experience is invaluable for the students. “Use this opportunity to gain experiences that you can later share and teach to others,” he stated.

Prof. Juni Handajani, Head of the Master's Program in Dental Science at UGM, added that this program is expected to motivate students to engage in further research and enhance their research capacities.

This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The collaboration between UGM and Okayama University is hoped to continue in the future, expanding educational and research opportunities.
