Tips for Maintaining Oral Health When Using Removable Braces

Using removable braces or orthodontic appliances is an important step for many people in aligning their teeth and correcting bite issues. However, this condition also requires extra care when it comes to maintaining oral hygiene. Here are several tips to help you keep your mouth healthy while using removable braces.

  1. Brush Your Teeth Regularly
It is essential to brush your teeth regularly, especially after eating. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth and braces. Be sure to brush around the braces as well to remove food debris and plaque that can cause tooth decay.
  2. Use Dental Floss or Interdental Cleaners
Flossing is crucial for cleaning between the teeth and around the braces. If your braces have components that make access difficult, consider using special dental cleaning tools designed to reach those tricky areas. This will help prevent plaque buildup and gum issues.
  3. Be Mindful of Your Diet
Avoid sticky, hard, or sugary foods that can damage your braces and increase the risk of tooth decay. For example, hard candies and sticky foods like caramel can be problematic. Instead, choose foods that are good for your teeth and gums, such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy products.
  4. Keep Your Braces Clean
Always clean your braces thoroughly when brushing your teeth. A study by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Tifani Sandri, supervised by drg. JCP. Heryumani Sulandjari, M.S., SpOrt(K), and Prof. Dr. drg. Pinandi Sri Pudyani., S.U, Sp.Ort.(K) , titled “The Effect of Guava Leaf (Psidium guajava L.) Extract Temperature on the Corrosion Rate of Stainless Steel Orthodontic Wires” showed that keeping the braces clean can help reduce the risk of corrosion and damage caused by high-temperature extracts. You may use a mild antiseptic mouth rinse after brushing for additional cleanliness.
  5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Schedule regular dental check-ups to ensure your oral health is well maintained. Your dentist can provide additional advice and care, and ensure your braces are functioning properly.
  6. Use Mouthwash
Consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to help maintain gum health and reduce plaque. Mouthwash can be a beneficial addition to your oral care routine.
  7. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is important for oral health. Water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist, which is essential for preventing gum and tooth problems.

Maintaining oral health while using removable braces requires extra care, but with the right steps, you can ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy. Proper brushing techniques, keeping your orthodontic appliance clean, and regular dental check-ups are key to successful dental care. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to consult a dental health professional.
