Pregnancy is a period full of changes, both physical and hormonal. These changes also affect oral health, including the risk of plaque buildup on teeth. Uncontrolled plaque accumulation can lead to various problems, such as gum inflammation (gingivitis) and more serious complications. Therefore, pregnant women need to pay extra attention to their dental and oral hygiene. Here are some tips to help prevent plaque buildup during pregnancy.
1. Maintain Regular Dental Hygiene
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect it from plaque damage. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritating the gums, which tend to be more sensitive during pregnancy.
2. Use Dental Floss
In addition to brushing, using dental floss is crucial to clean between teeth that a toothbrush can't reach. Plaque often accumulates in these areas and can develop into tartar if not cleaned regularly.
3. Pay Attention to Your Diet
Consuming nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, can help maintain oral health. Avoid sweet or sticky foods that can accelerate plaque formation. If you crave sweet foods, make sure to clean your teeth immediately after consuming them.
4. Drink Enough Water
Water helps clean food residues and plaque from the surface of the teeth. Adequate saliva also plays an important role in maintaining the balance of bacteria in the mouth. If you experience dry mouth during pregnancy, increase your water intake or consult your dentist.
5. Visit the Dentist Regularly
Regular dental check-ups are crucial, especially during pregnancy. Dentists can help clean accumulated plaque and provide appropriate care advice. Ideally, pregnant women should have a dental check-up at least once in the second trimester.
6. Avoid Risky Habits
Smoking and alcohol consumption not only adversely affect the baby's health but also worsen oral conditions, including accelerating plaque buildup. Avoiding these habits is highly recommended for the health of both mother and baby.
7. Use Antibacterial Mouthwash
If recommended by a dentist, pregnant women can use antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce plaque-causing bacteria. Choose products that are safe for pregnancy and alcohol-free.

Preventing plaque buildup during pregnancy is not only important for the mother's dental and oral health but also supports the health of the baby. Pregnant women can reduce the risk of more serious dental health issues by maintaining regular dental hygiene, eating healthy foods, and visiting the dentist regularly. Good care during pregnancy is an investment in the long-term health of both mother and baby. This effort also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 5: Gender Equality, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
