Topical Fluoride Application for Children with Special Needs in Surakarta

Lecturers and students from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), in collaboration with the Indonesian Society of Pediatric Dentistry (IDGAI) DIY-Central Java, successfully conducted the “Topical Fluoride Application for Children with Special Needs” event on Saturday, 30 November 2024, at UPTD PLDPI Surakarta. This event was held to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities and to enhance dental health access for children with special needs.

This initiative aimed to address dental health issues among children, particularly those with disabilities who often face challenges in accessing dental care. The event was well received by parents, healthcare professionals, and educators, who expressed their appreciation for the initiative. One parent shared, "We are very grateful for this event. It not only provides essential dental care but also increases our awareness of the importance of oral hygiene for children with special needs."

As part of the event, children received topical fluoride applications as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of dental caries. Additionally, educational sessions for parents and caregivers were conducted, emphasizing the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and early interventions to prevent dental issues. Drg. Arif Rahman Setyawan, one of the participating pediatric dentists, stated, "Fluoride application for children with special needs is a crucial step in protecting their teeth from caries. We also strive to provide appropriate education so that parents and caregivers feel more confident in maintaining their children's oral health at home."

This initiative is a real example of collaboration between IDGAI DIY-Central Java and FKG UGM in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by providing better access to dental healthcare; SDG 4: Quality Education, by educating the community on the importance of oral hygiene; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering collaborations among various stakeholders to create a more inclusive environment for children with special needs.
