IoT-Based Waste Scale Officially Begins Operation at FKG UGM

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) officially began operating an Internet of Things (IoT)-based waste scale on Monday, 4 May 2026. This digital device functions to automatically record and monitor waste volume within the faculty environment.

The Coordinator of Facilities and Infrastructure at FKG UGM, Buana Yaksa Surya Atmaja, S.T., M.Eng., stated that the new system makes waste management simpler. Staff members are also able to adapt quickly because the device’s operational features are very user-friendly.

“The volume of waste produced by the FKG academic community is now more measurable. Moving forward, we can use this data as a basis for policies aimed at reducing waste within the faculty,” said Buana on 5 May.

Buana encouraged all campus residents to begin using environmentally friendly products in order to reduce waste production. Nevertheless, he noted that the faculty currently does not yet have a representative centralized waste disposal facility.

Meanwhile, Bowo, a cleaning staff member responsible for operating the IoT scale, admitted that daily waste recording has now become more organized. The system helps him track the types of waste that accumulate the most each day.

“Waste is now clearly recorded and monitored. We can now understand the distribution of waste data within FKG UGM. At the moment, most of the incoming waste is inorganic. Usually, the largest amount consists of cardboard and plastic bottles,” Bowo explained.
