UGM Faculty of Dentistry Team Advances to IODR 2025 Semifinals

The Universitas Gadjah Mada Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM) team, consisting of Morincha Radin Pradhanta Yustanto and Nadine Mutiara Wibowo, successfully advanced to the semifinal round of the Indonesian Olympiad of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (IODR) 2025 after securing second place in the national preliminary round held online on Saturday (14/6).

The Indonesian Olympiad of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (IODR) is a prestigious national-level competition designed for undergraduate and professional dental students across Indonesia, focusing on the field of dentomaxillofacial radiology. It serves not only as a platform for competition but also as an opportunity for students to learn from experts and enhance their academic and professional development in dental radiology.

This year’s competition involved 59 teams from various dental schools across Indonesia, with FKG UGM sending three of its best teams. These teams were composed of six students from both undergraduate and professional levels.

Dr. drg. Rini Widyaningrum, M.Biotech, one of the faculty advisors, expressed her satisfaction and pride in the performance of all three teams. “All three teams performed with confidence and managed to handle the questions well. They were able to adapt to the time pressure and the broad scope of materials,” said Rini.

She noted that all lecturers from the Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology were actively involved in mentoring, from providing materials to conducting practice sessions and simulations. The guidance was carried out gradually and intensively since the internal selection stage.

For Morincha, this was her first time joining a national olympiad. “It was very nerve-racking, especially since the lecturers told us that the competition concept this year was different from previous years,” she shared.

Known among peers as Ancha, she added that during preparation, she and her teammate had to study several new materials that were not previously covered in class. The mentoring from lecturers greatly supported their preparation.

Meanwhile, Nadine shared that her interest in dental radiology did not emerge by chance. During her clinical training, she realized the crucial role of radiology in clinical practice. “I saw firsthand how important this knowledge is in supporting diagnosis and determining patient treatment plans,” she said.

The FKG UGM team advancing to the semifinals will undergo further mentoring in preparation for the next stage, which will be held in Surabaya on 16 July 2025. Insights from the preliminary round will serve as the foundation to strengthen their mastery of materials ahead of the semifinals.

Rini emphasized that competitions like IODR are important for fostering academic competitiveness while also providing valuable learning opportunities for students to test their skills. She hopes that this event will encourage higher academic quality and strengthen networks among dental students across Indonesia.

As a note, all three FKG UGM teams competing in the preliminaries successfully placed in the national top 10, ranking 2nd, 8th, and 10th respectively. Only the six highest-scoring teams qualified for the semifinals.
