Three students from the Professional Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), participated in a student exchange program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Osaka University. This program was part of the International Students Week (ISW), which took place from 9 to 13 December 2024. The three students—Rafidah Kemala, Poeti Surya Nadia, and Saskia Deswita Maharani—were accompanied by Drg. Trianna Wahyu Utami, MD.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Collaboration at FKG UGM.
During ISW, FKG UGM students participated in a series of laboratory visits, mini-lectures, and an excursion to Osaka Dental Hospital. One of the highlights of the program was a mini-lecture on the fundamentals and applications of artificial intelligence in dentistry. Additionally, students visited the Morita dental unit and radiology equipment factory and museum, which has been in operation since 1916.
The UGM students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to engage in an exchange of knowledge, skills, and culture through this international collaboration between FKG UGM and Osaka University. This initiative not only enriched their academic journey but also deepened their understanding of global dental practices.
This program is expected to serve as a milestone in the international partnership between the Faculty of Dentistry, UGM, and Osaka University. By prioritizing education, cultural diversity, and capacity building, both institutions aim to prepare the next generation of dental professionals for the evolving global healthcare landscape.
The collaboration aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 – Quality Education: Equipping students with essential skills and knowledge for future success; and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Emphasizing the importance of global collaboration in addressing healthcare challenges and advancing dental education.
Beyond academic activities, this exchange program provided students with an immersive experience in Japanese culture while broadening their global perspectives. Interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds allowed them to gain a richer educational experience, fostering mutual respect and cross-cultural understanding among future healthcare professionals.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, partnerships like this play a crucial role in promoting innovative practices and cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing. The insights gained from this exchange will contribute to the personal and professional growth of students, equipping them with the necessary competencies to become future leaders in dentistry.
The student exchange program at Osaka University marks a significant step toward achieving the SDGs by expanding educational opportunities and fostering global partnerships. This collaboration between UGM and Osaka University reflects a shared commitment to developing future dental professionals who are not only skilled in their field but also culturally aware and globally minded.
