3D Printing Techniques for Removable Partial Dentures in Dentistry

Prof. Sheng-Wei Feng from Taipei Medical University, in his Guest Lecture at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada on 21 August 2025, presented impression techniques for removable partial dentures, particularly the use of impressions in the anterior and posterior areas. The speakers emphasized that although textbooks may suggest avoiding impressions in the posterior area, clinical experience shows that this technique is effective if positioned correctly. They also discussed digital impression techniques, noting that although digital methods have limitations in detecting soft tissue characteristics and managing undercuts, these methods are suitable for cases with short scanning times and minimal bone resorption.

3D Printing in Dental Procedures

Prof. Sheng discussed the application of 3D printing technology in dental procedures, highlighting its advantages such as time efficiency, accuracy, and better outcomes. He explained the process of making digital impressions and dentures, noting that while 3D printing offers significant benefits, the method still faces challenges such as color accuracy and requires careful parameter adjustments. Prof. Sheng also addressed questions regarding the use of digital scanners, comparisons between milling machines and 3D printing, as well as the use of metal frameworks in complete dentures, stressing that technological advancements have made traditional methods such as wax impressions less necessary.
