A Moral Responsibility to Keep Anatomy Relevant, Up-to-Date, and Clinically Meaningful

“Since my undergraduate years, I have always been fond of anatomy and histology. For me, studying the structure of the human body and the relationship between form and function is truly fascinating,” said Dr. drg. Anne Handrini Dewi, M.Kes., PAK (K).

The 2025 National Scientific Meeting and National Working Meeting of the Indonesian Association of Anatomists (PAAI), held from 30 September to 4 October 2025 in Surakarta, included the official inauguration of Medical Anatomy Consultant (Pakar Anatomi Kedokteran/Konsultan) for Dr. drg. Anne Handrini Dewi, M.Kes., PAK (K), affectionately known as drg. Anne.

“Praise be to God, when I became a lecturer, I was able to join the Department of Dental Biomedicine and have been involved in teaching Anatomy and Histology since 2000. Although much of my research focuses on tissue engineering, it always involves anatomical and histological studies. During my master’s program, I pursued Basic and Biomedical Medicine at FKKMK UGM with a concentration in Anatomy. Likewise, during my doctoral studies, my research focused on the development of tissue engineering with several studies including microanatomy (histology),” explained drg. Anne.

Her strong passion for anatomy led drg. Anne and her colleagues to organize a cadaver dissection workshop (surgical practice on preserved human bodies for anatomical education, especially in medical schools), which was successfully conducted and involved participants from across Indonesia. This initiative sparked ideas for the development of anatomy education, particularly in the field of Dentistry.

drg. Anne has long been active in the anatomy community through PAAI (Indonesian Association of Anatomists). Her involvement has brought her to various scientific forums, PAAI National Scientific Meetings, and community service activities, strengthening her identity not only as an anatomy educator but also as a developer of the discipline who must continue to move forward.

Inauguration as Medical Anatomy Consultant

The inauguration of anatomical expertise was conducted as part of the PAAI National Scientific Meeting (PIN PAAI) on 3 October 2025, marked by the presentation of the Official Decree of Expertise by the Chairman of PB PAAI, dr. Nur Arfian, Ph.D. This inauguration, held before the national anatomy community, became a historic moment and represents the highest academic honor in the field of anatomy in Indonesia.

This recognition was granted based on an academic track record in anatomy according to official criteria set by PAAI National, including:

  1. More than 5 years of teaching anatomy and histology in medical faculties, fulfilling the three main pillars of Tridharma (education, research, and community service).
  2. Linear academic background in biomedicine/anatomy-histology.
  3. Active scientific involvement, including participation in PIN PAAI, national and international publications, and academic supervision of students.
  4. Organizational contributions, particularly in curriculum development, integration of basic and clinical sciences, and education of younger generations.

This inauguration is not merely personal recognition but a form of professional responsibility. With 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and community service in anatomy, drg. Anne is highly deserving of the PAK (K) title.

The Meaning of the Inauguration for drg. Anne

For her, this inauguration is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a greater responsibility. The title of expertise is scholarly recognition of dedication to anatomy education. It reflects a commitment to continue nurturing future doctors and dentists who understand the human body holistically. It is also a moral responsibility to keep anatomy relevant, up-to-date, and clinically meaningful. Its deepest meaning is being part of the continuity of anatomical scholarship in Indonesia—aligned with the PAAI motto: “Towards Meaningful and Impactful Anatomy for Indonesia.”
