In the academic world, especially for doctoral (Ph.D.) students, challenges often come in the form of complex research demands and high expectations. However, at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), many students have found ways to make their academic experience more enjoyable and flexible, thanks to the supportive campus facilities available.
One of the most popular study spots among doctoral students is the Faculty of Dentistry Library. With its calm atmosphere and comprehensive collection of literature, students can deeply engage with their research topics. "The library provides the tranquility I need. I can sit for hours, fully concentrate on my work, read the latest journals and books that support my research, and write my dissertation without distractions," said Putri Raisah, a doctoral student in Dental Science.

Aside from the library, campus cafés are also a favorite place for doctoral students to discuss and work in a more relaxed setting. Many believe that a less formal and comfortable atmosphere enhances creativity. "I often hold group discussions at the café. The relaxed environment helps new ideas emerge. Plus, we have fast Wi-Fi to access references, share documents, and casually chat with fellow researchers over coffee. Many innovative ideas are born from informal interactions, making the campus café not just a comfortable place but also an inspiring one," said Muh Hidayat Syahruddin, a doctoral student in Dental Science.

Another increasingly popular spot for students is the campus atrium. Initially seen as just a transit area, it has now become a prime location for studying and discussions. With its open space, natural lighting, and proximity to discussion rooms and faculty offices, the atrium offers a comfortable yet non-restrictive working environment. Spontaneous interactions often lead to new insights, and many doctoral students appreciate the presence of classmates and lecturers nearby. The centrally located atrium also serves as a great place to prepare for meetings or important seminars.
The integration of technology in learning has significantly improved flexibility at UGM. With access to online databases and digital resources, students can conduct research from anywhere. This flexibility allows them to balance academic responsibilities with personal commitments, making the learning process less stressful and more enjoyable.
A supportive academic community also plays a crucial role in fostering a positive learning environment at UGM. Workshops, seminars, and peer-support groups are regularly held to encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing among students. "The sense of community here is incredible. We often collaborate on research projects and share insights that enrich our work. It’s reassuring to know that we’re not alone in this journey," Putri added.
Additionally, the faculty promotes a culture of innovation and creativity, which is essential for developing new ideas in dental science. Students are encouraged to think beyond boundaries and explore unconventional research approaches. This culture not only enhances their academic experience but also contributes to the advancement of the field.
As part of its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education, UGM ensures that students thrive in their research efforts while enjoying the process. By providing diverse study spaces and resources, FKG UGM continues to set an example of how a supportive and flexible learning environment can lead to academic success.
