Several key standards, including temperature, lighting, noise levels, air quality, ergonomics, and cleanliness, serve as primary indicators of comfort. The implementation of these standards is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
Key Aspects of Classroom Comfort Standards
- Stable Room Temperature
The ideal classroom temperature ranges between 22-25ºC to maintain student comfort. Extreme temperatures—either too hot or too cold—can reduce concentration and hinder the learning process. Air conditioning or well-ventilated spaces are necessary to maintain a stable temperature. - Adequate Lighting
A lighting intensity of 300-500 lux is the standard for supporting reading and writing activities. A combination of natural light from windows and strategically placed artificial lighting helps reduce eye strain, enhance student focus, and create a pleasant learning atmosphere. - Minimal Noise Levels
An ideal learning environment should maintain noise levels below 35 decibels. Locating classrooms away from noisy areas (such as roads) and using sound-absorbing materials are effective solutions for creating a quiet and focused learning atmosphere. - Good Air Quality
Clean air with carbon dioxide levels below 1000 ppm and humidity levels between 40-60% is essential. Ventilation systems or exhaust fans ensure proper air circulation, providing students with a healthy and comfortable environment. - Ergonomic Design and Classroom Layout
Desks and chairs should be designed to match students’ postures, preventing fatigue and encouraging proper sitting positions. A well-organized classroom layout also ensures adequate movement space, promoting effective interactions during the learning process. - Cleanliness and Organization
A clean and well-organized classroom has a positive impact on students’ health and learning comfort. Proper maintenance, including dust-free surfaces, clean floors, and well-kept storage spaces, helps prevent allergies and respiratory issues, ensuring a hygienic learning environment.
