A Slice of Story from Buton Island

Through the DTPK (Remote, Border, and Island Areas) Internship Program, drg. Renata Wening Smara Larasatichose to experience living far from home, building stories in one of Indonesia’s remote regions. Renata stayed at the official residence of the Buton District Hospital, together with fellow DTPK participants—new companions who at first were strangers but soon became family. Living with ten people under one roof, they learned to work together in cooking, shopping, and keeping their residence clean.

“We make sure to keep the residence comfortable to live in. But it’s not just the house that makes us feel at home in Buton. Buton is a paradise of beaches—snorkeling, diving, caving, watching dolphins jump at sunset. Every day feels like a holiday, where we work and enjoy nature at the same time. On weekdays, we continue our dental and oral health education programs. We also exercise regularly—gym, tennis, badminton. The DTPK experience is truly unforgettable,” said Renata.
