2024 PBOI Scientific Seminar and National Working Meeting: Strengthening Collaboration for Oral and Dental Health in Indonesia

Surabaya, 9-10 August 2024 – The 6th Scientific Seminar of the Indonesian Society of Oral Biology (PBOI) was held alongside the PBOI National Working Meeting (Rakernas) and community service activities. This event, part of "Unity in ICD," was organized by Hang Tuah University with the aim of enhancing knowledge and skills in dentistry and fostering closer professional relationships in the field of oral biology.

The event was attended by key figures in oral biology and dentistry, including Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, MKes., PhD, Chair of PBOI and Head of the Master's Program in Oral Medicine at Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Faculty of Dentistry, along with other notable figures such as Dr. drg. Alma Linggar Jonarta, MKes, Prof. Dr. drg. Regina TC. Tandelilin, MSc., PBO, drg. Heni Susilowati, MKes., PhD, PBO, drg. Heriati Sitosari, MDSc., PhD, and Budi Rodestawati, S.Kp.G, MPH, who actively participated in the scientific activities.

The "Unity in ICD" seminar, an international event organized by Hang Tuah University, aimed to deepen knowledge in dentistry and oral biology. The seminar allowed participants to update their insights on the latest innovations in oral biology research, oral microbiology, and periodontal diseases, all of which play a crucial role in oral and dental health.

“We are here to share knowledge and the latest innovations in oral biology,” said Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, MKes., PhD, in her opening remarks. She also emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration to improve the quality of dental education and healthcare in Indonesia.

The 2024 PBOI National Working Meeting (Rakernas) served as a crucial forum for PBOI members to evaluate the organization’s performance over the past year and formulate improved work plans for the future. It also provided a platform for discussions to strengthen professional networks across Indonesia and share experiences among members.

Through this Rakernas, PBOI continues to contribute to the enhancement of dental education standards, in line with SDG 4 (Quality Education). By developing the skills of its members, PBOI plays a key role in producing competent professionals in oral and dental healthcare.

In addition to the scientific seminar and Rakernas, PBOI also organized a community service program focused on raising public awareness about the importance of maintaining oral and dental health. This initiative involved PBOI members collaborating with various parties to deliver health education to local communities.

This community service aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), particularly by ensuring broader access to dental care in remote areas. “This year’s Rakernas is not just a platform for scientific discussions but also a tangible expression of PBOI's commitment to community service,” added Prof. Juni Handajani.

The event resulted in a strategic partnership between PBOI, the International College of Dentists Section Indonesia (ICD Indonesia), and Hang Tuah University’s Faculty of Dentistry. This collaboration aims to strengthen international relations and share the latest knowledge and technologies in dentistry.

This partnership not only expands PBOI's network but also supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by building strong collaborations among academics, practitioners, and the government to achieve common goals in improving oral and dental health in Indonesia.
