“This achievement is very meaningful to me because it is my first experience winning in the academic field. Previously, I had never participated in a research competition, let alone managed to win. Therefore, when it was announced that I had won 2nd Place at the international level, I felt very happy and at the same time never expected to achieve it,” — drg. Fendy Rizkyawan.
The Oral Presentation (Three-Minute Presentation) took place in a highly competitive atmosphere. Each participant was given three minutes to present the essence of their research briefly, concisely, and clearly, followed by a short Q&A session with two judges. There were 10 participants in the Basic Science category oral presentation out of a total of 50 participants from various countries. The main challenge for drg. Fendy was how to deliver his research before an international audience within such a limited time — only three minutes. In such a short duration, every detail, from clarity of pronunciation, accuracy of delivery, to time management, had to be carefully considered. Even a small mistake or exceeding the allotted time could affect the evaluation results. Therefore, the biggest challenge was summarizing a fairly complex study into a short, concise, yet easy-to-understand presentation.
The strength of drg. Fendy’s research lay in the results, which were consistent with the hypothesis, thus providing a clear and convincing research flow. In addition, he prepared his presentation with a simple yet effective PowerPoint display, featuring more images than text, making it easier for the audience to understand and more visually appealing. In terms of delivery, drg. Fendy strived to appear confident without looking back at the screen, as he had mastered the narrative he wanted to convey. With clear and straightforward intonation, he was able to present his research concisely yet still engagingly. According to him, the combination of the strength of the material and the delivery method was an important factor that led him to win 2nd Place.
Of course, there was a team involved in preparing for this competition. The research idea originated from his thesis supervisor, Dr. drg. Indra Bramanti, MSc., Sp.KGA(K). In addition, drg. Fendy also received full support from drg. Asikin Nur, M.Kes., Ph.D., who guided and encouraged him to participate in this competition. Moreover, drg. Fendy greatly benefited from the guidance, support, and valuable input of drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio(K), Ph.D., drg. Rahmadani Puspitasari, MDSc., drg. Jessy Wijaya, M.DSc., and drg. Marapandi Cakra, M.DSc., who consistently provided motivation, tips, and advice in his preparation. According to drg. Fendy, this success in winning 2nd Place could not be separated from the team’s contribution and the extraordinary guidance of lecturers and colleagues who continuously supported him.
This championship was very meaningful for drg. Fendy as it marked his first academic achievement. Previously, he had never joined a research competition, let alone won one. Therefore, when it was announced that he had won 2nd Place at the international level, he felt extremely happy and at the same time never thought it possible. This accomplishment has given him a huge boost in confidence and motivation to participate in more academic competitions in the future. drg. Fendy hopes that UGM will continue to bring pride to Indonesia on the international stage through achievements in science and research.
