Pediatric Dentistry Residents Expand Knowledge in Airway Study for Children

Residents of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), are actively expanding their expertise through the Airway Study for Children initiative, which took place from November to December 2024. Held at FKG UGM, this initiative involved both students and lecturers of the Pediatric Dentistry specialist program. Its primary objective was to enhance understanding of the relationship between airway health and children's growth and development.

The Airway Study for Children was led by drg. Sabrina Ceasy, under the guidance of drg. Anrizandy Narwidina, M.DSc, Sp.KGA, Ph.D. The program focused on understanding how airway disorders, such as sleep apnea and respiratory obstructions, impact dental development and overall child health. drg. Sabrina Ceasy emphasized the significance of this study, stating, “Understanding the role of the airway in child development is crucial for us as pediatric dentists. This knowledge enables us to provide better care and make a significant impact on a child's overall health.”

The initiative included in-depth research conducted by residents to explore the effects of airway health on child development, as well as workshops and seminars on pediatric airway management. Besides enhancing the residents' academic capabilities, the findings from this study are expected to make a tangible contribution to the advancement of pediatric dentistry.

As a mentor, drg. Anrizandy Narwidina highlighted the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration between pediatric dentists, otolaryngologists, and pediatricians in providing holistic care. “This collaboration ensures that all aspects of a child’s health are considered, leading to a more comprehensive developmental approach,” he explained.

In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this initiative demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and interdisciplinary cooperation: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Reducing child mortality caused by respiratory disorders; SDG 4 – Quality Education: Promoting education and ongoing professional development; and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations to improve children's well-being globally. Through innovative research, collaborative learning, and specialized training, this initiative reflects FKG UGM’s dedication to advancing pediatric dentistry and promoting child health.
