As part of the National Orthodontics Specialist Competency Examination organized by the Indonesian Orthodontics Collegium on 12 July 2025 at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, one orthodontics resident from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, achieved a remarkable accomplishment in the technical skills category. drg. Maria Felicitas Ajeng Estuningtyas earned 5th place nationally in the wire bending examination, which specifically evaluates participants’ manual skills in shaping and modifying orthodontic wires with precision and efficiency.
Wire bending is a key component in assessing the competence of future orthodontics specialists, as it reflects the essential technical skills required in daily clinical practice. The exam demands accuracy, fine motor coordination, and a solid understanding of orthodontic wire forms and biomechanics. During the test, participants were given limited time to complete a series of wire designs based on established international standards.
The achievement of drg. Maria Felicitas Ajeng Estuningtyas demonstrates that orthodontics education at FKG UGM not only emphasizes mastery of theory and clinical diagnosis but also strengthens manual technical skills, which are the backbone of orthodontic practice. This accomplishment further enhances UGM’s overall success, with the university being awarded the Overall Champion of the 2025 National Orthodontics Competency Examination.
This milestone underscores FKG UGM’s tangible contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering a comprehensive, standardized, and adaptive specialist education system that responds to modern clinical practice needs. It also ensures that orthodontics specialists are equipped with technical competencies to deliver safer, more accurate, and effective orthodontic care to the wider community.
The Department of Orthodontics, FKG UGM, extends its appreciation to all residents for their dedication and hard work in bringing pride to the institution at this national event. The department remains committed to nurturing future orthodontists who are not only academically competent but also skilled, ethical, and broad-minded.
