Post-Tooth Extraction Healing Process: Facts and Myths

Tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures in dentistry. However, many people worry about the healing process afterward, often influenced by various myths. Understanding the facts about post-tooth extraction healing can help patients feel more at ease and ensure that the recovery process goes smoothly.

After a tooth is extracted, the body immediately begins the natural healing process. In the first few hours, a blood clot forms in the extraction site to protect the bone and surrounding tissue. This is a crucial stage, as the blood clot helps prevent infection and speeds up the healing process. However, there is a myth that vigorously rinsing the mouth after extraction helps clean the wound area. In reality, this can damage the newly formed blood clot and slow down the healing process.

Interestingly, students from the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) have conducted research that may help accelerate the post-tooth extraction healing process. Five FKG UGM students discovered Spidweb Gel, an innovation based on spider web technology designed to speed up the healing of extraction wounds. This research on the development of Spidweb Gel originated from the Student Creativity Program in Research (PKM-P), under the guidance of Drg. Alma Linggar Jonarta, M.Kes. This innovation helped them advance to the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) 2014. Spidweb Gel provides an effective alternative to speed up recovery after tooth extraction and offers new hope for patients in need of faster healing.

The development of Spidweb Gel demonstrates how quality education and research can lead to innovations that benefit society. This aligns with SDG 4, which encourages innovative and research-based higher education. Furthermore, Spidweb Gel, as an innovative solution, also supports SDG 12 by introducing an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to assist the healing process after tooth extractions. Additionally, it reduces reliance on chemicals or conventional methods that may be less efficient.

Innovations like Spidweb Gel are a form of technological advancement in the field of dentistry. This supports SDG 9, which promotes innovation to create more efficient and effective healthcare solutions.

In addition to innovations like Spidweb Gel, many people believe that consuming hot food or drinks will accelerate healing. In fact, hot temperatures can irritate the wound and prolong recovery. It is important to avoid overly hot food or drinks. It is recommended to choose soft and cold foods, such as yogurt or cold juice, during the first few days after the procedure.

There is also a myth that light physical activity, such as exercise, can be done immediately after tooth extraction. In reality, patients are advised to rest for at least 24-48 hours after the procedure. This is because excessive physical activity can increase blood pressure and cause further bleeding in the wound area. Adequate rest is essential to ensure the healing process goes smoothly and without complications.

Another common concern is post-extraction infection. Some people believe that all extraction wounds will inevitably become infected without antibiotics. However, the fact is that most tooth extraction wounds do not require antibiotics unless there are signs of infection or the patient has specific medical conditions. As long as the patient follows the care instructions provided by the dentist, such as maintaining oral hygiene and avoiding smoking, the risk of infection remains low.

Recognizing the difference between facts and myths in post-tooth extraction care is crucial for a quick and effective recovery. Innovations like Spidweb Gel can accelerate healing. Following the dentist’s advice, avoiding activities that could slow healing, and maintaining oral hygiene are steps that can help ensure the healing process goes well.

While many myths circulate, understanding the healing process based on medical facts and the support of the latest innovations will give patients the confidence to navigate the recovery period without unnecessary anxiety.

Accurate information about dental care plays an important role in improving patients' well-being and quality of life, which is closely related to SDG 3.
